Calico reads your school accounts on your Mac and keeps that there. Here is exactly what goes where.
What stays on your Mac
- Canvas, Genesis and Gmail data: assignments, grades, schedule, tardies and mail subjects. Calico reads them in sign-in windows it opens (it never sees your passwords) and keeps them in its own folder on your Mac. They are not sent to Calico’s server or to anyone else.
- Your Groq key, if you turn on Ask: kept in the macOS Keychain.
What is saved on Calico’s server (Cloudflare)
- Your panel layout and settings, tasks, notes, homework, important dates and focus statistics, so a new Mac can get them back with a recovery key.
- A random device token (stored only as a hash) and the recovery key (stored only as a hash). There is no account name, email or password.
- Rough, anonymous facts about the device: app version, macOS version and country.
- Messages you send from the website’s feedback form, and your email if you add it.
You can turn sync off, and delete everything from the server, in Settings → Sync & backup.
What goes to the AI
When you ask the assistant something that Calico can’t answer from your own school data, the question (and the last exchange) is sent to Groq as text, with a short instruction about how to reply. Nothing from Canvas, Genesis or Gmail is ever included. Groq’s own terms and privacy policy apply to what you send it.
Weather
The Weather panel asks Calico’s server for the forecast. The server works out roughly where you are from your connection (to about 10 km), asks Open-Meteo, and sends the forecast back. Nothing is stored.
Not affiliated
Calico is independent. It is not made by or affiliated with Apple, Instructure, Genesis Education, Google or Groq.
